Rhode Island Blood Center recently welcomed Senator Lammis J. Vargas for a visit that brought her advocacy full circle, from championing blood donation legislation at the State House to experiencing the donor journey firsthand.

Senator Vargas visited alongside her friends, Estella and Imanah, spending time at the center learning more about the donation process and the work that takes place behind the scenes to support patients across the region. During the visit, Senator Vargas successfully donated blood, reinforcing her ongoing commitment to strengthening the blood supply and encouraging donor participation.

Following her donation, Senator Vargas toured the laboratory to gain a deeper understanding of how donated blood is processed, tested, and prepared for hospital partners throughout New England. The visit offered an opportunity to showcase the scale and complexity of the work that happens after a donor leaves the chair, as well as the critical role every donation plays in patient care.

Earlier this month, Senator Vargas introduced Senate Bill 2928, legislation that would provide paid leave for blood donation and help reduce barriers that can prevent individuals from giving. The bill received unanimous support from the Senate Labor and Gaming Committee, reflecting growing recognition of the importance of maintaining a strong and stable blood supply.

Senator Vargas has spoken publicly about her personal connection to blood donation, sharing experiences that underscore the life-saving impact of transfusion medicine. Her continued support, both legislatively and personally, highlights the role advocates can play in ensuring blood is available for patients when it is needed most.

We are grateful to Senator Vargas, Estella, and Imanah for their visit and for helping shine a light on the importance of blood donation and community partnership.
