On May 29, Rhode Island Blood Center welcomed Congressman Gabe Amo for a tour of our Providence headquarters and laboratory facilities.
During the visit, Congressman Amo met with local leadership to discuss the ongoing need for blood donations and the critical role Rhode Island Blood Center plays in supporting hospitals throughout the region. He also toured our laboratory operations, home to the largest infectious disease testing facility in the Northeast, where every donated unit undergoes extensive screening to help ensure the safety of the blood supply.

A central topic of discussion was the blood supply. While maintaining a 5- to 7-day inventory is the goal, blood centers often operate with just a 2- to 3-day supply on hand, leaving little room for unexpected increases in demand.
The conversation was particularly timely as we enter the summer months—a period that traditionally brings greater pressure on the blood supply. Increased travel, outdoor activities, and emergency incidents can drive higher demand for blood, while donor turnout often declines as people adjust their schedules for vacations and seasonal commitments.
Congressman Amo’s visit provided an opportunity to highlight both the challenges and the impact of our work. Support from community leaders helps raise awareness of the constant need for blood donations and reinforces the importance of maintaining a safe, stable blood supply for the patients who depend on it every day.
We thank Congressman Amo for taking the time to learn more about our mission and for helping amplify the need for blood donors across Rhode Island.
