Rhode Island Blood Center (RIBC) was founded in 1979 as a nonprofit community blood center. We provide blood throughout the state and regionally for patients being treated at leading hospitals.
We run seven full-time donation centers across Rhode Island, one in Middletown, CT, and mobile drives throughout both states.
RIBC has long-standing relationships with many organizations in the community who sponsor blood drives. These sponsors help inspire, educate, and encourage the many volunteer blood donors needed to supply the blood and blood products that must be collected each day to meet the needs of patients and hospitals we serve in Rhode Island and throughout New England.
We are much more than just a blood collection organization or blood center. We also provide therapeutic treatments for patients in local hospitals, including:
- Therapeutic apheresis which involves removing abnormal components or cells from the blood and then returning the healthy cells back to the patient.
- Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) histocompatibility red cell typing and immunogenics provided by our New York Blood Center Enterprise state-of-the-art laboratories.
We are part of the National Marrow Donor Program and collect stem cells for transplant at its Providence location.

In 2019, RIBC merged with New York Blood Center Enterprises (NYBCe). - Provide the highest quality blood and stem cell products and related medical and consultative services to hospitals and patients.
- Conduct the highest quality, novel, and innovative research in the fields of hematology, blood banking and transfusion medicine, and cellular therapies, thus advancing these fields and positively impacting public health.
- Develop products, technologies, and services in the fields of hematology, blood banking, transfusion medicine, and cellular therapies with the potential to have worldwide humanitarian impact.
- Train the next generation of leaders in each of these fields.
