Matthew was born with sickle cell anemia and receives monthly red blood cell exchanges. This means the RIBC Therapeutics team removes some of his damaged cells and replaces them with healthy blood. Without those treatments, Matthew can go into sickle cell crisis at any moment, which includes symptoms of severe pain, swelling in his joints, back pain, and high fevers.
