Every year, as high school students turn 16 years old, many roll up their sleeves and donate blood for the very first time, providing 10% of the blood supply to the patients and hospitals RIBC serves. The proof of their extraordinary efforts, the important part they play in our healthcare system and in the lives of people in our community is in the numbers:
- 66 high schools (public, private, vocational-tech, charter and religious) participate in our state's blood program by hosting blood drives
- Since 2003, the start of RIBC's High School Heroes program, well over 65,000 donations have been made thanks to these students
- During the school year, over 7,000 blood donations were made, potentially helping as many as 21,000 people.
